A guide to parental controls on phones in Egypt

Why does an Egyptian family need something different?

The first difference is commercial rather than technical. The well-known parental control tools are priced in dollars and need an international card. Tabaa is priced in Egyptian pounds and paid for with Egyptian electronic payment methods, with discount coupons - the prices are on the pricing page.

The second difference is language and support. Qustodio answers the supported-languages question on Google Play with a list that does not include Arabic: English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Japanese and Chinese. Its support page says it takes requests by email and aims to reply within 48 hours. The published support channel for BlockerX is a single email address. Tabaa support is on WhatsApp, in Arabic, answered by a person, at +201507966165.

The third difference is specific to Egypt: banking and payment apps. Some of them may restrict how they work on a device that has granted another app advanced system permissions, which is a well-known anti-fraud measure, because the permission that reads the screen is the very thing fraud software abuses. Both InstaPay and the National Bank of Egypt app have published update notes describing a change in the app's behaviour on devices where advanced system permissions have been granted. This is not the case with every banking app; the Banque Misr app, for instance, says nothing of the kind. Tabaa asks for no accessibility service, no notification reader, and runs no VPN on the phone in the first place, so there is nothing on the device for a banking app to object to.

One Google account, or as many as you like?

A child in Egypt rarely has just one account: one for school, one for games, and the father's account signed in on the phone for buying apps. This is where a fundamental difference shows up. Google's FAQ says a supervised child is allowed to add a Google Workspace for Education account alongside his personal supervised account. Google also says that if you add other personal profiles to the device, the Family Link settings for your child's account will not apply to those profiles, and advises parents to put a screen lock on the other profile themselves.

Tabaa does not touch accounts at all: there is no restriction anywhere in the product on adding, deleting or switching a Google account, because the protection is bound to the device itself. Sign in with as many accounts as you want and not a letter of the blocking changes. What does get closed are the routes people actually use to get around a control tool: the work profile is locked on every supported version, app cloning and private space are locked on Android 15 and newer, and adding, removing and switching users is locked on every version. That last one is what covers second space on Xiaomi phones, since it is in reality an additional Android user. And we will state the limit plainly: on Android 9 to 14 there is no dedicated system restriction for app cloning, so the dual apps feature is covered only to the extent that the manufacturer implements it as an extra user. Practical steps for a parent

1. Set the device up once

Install Tabaa Children from a computer over the charging cable, following the steps on the installation page - no factory reset, and no data is lost. That step is what gives the app Device Owner. From that moment on, the thing doing the blocking is Android itself: an app that is not allowed does not open and then close, it does not respond to being opened at all. That is why the block applies to any launcher your son installs, to any user on the phone, on Wi-Fi and mobile data alike, and with any SIM he puts in.

2. Choose the modes that suit your child's age

• Four modes in a fixed order of priority: strict focus, then sleep, then study, then normal.
• Sleep and study are daily windows in which nothing opens but what you chose for that window, and the clock is pinned to network time automatically whenever any mode is active, so moving it forward does not skip past the window.
• Strict focus is a countdown that fills the screen for a period you set, during which nothing opens, not even calls. Restarting the phone does not end it, and cutting the internet does not end it, because its end time is written on the device rather than on the server.
• Daily time limits per individual app, not just for the device as a whole.
• Porn filtering is permanent and SafeSearch is forced with no configuration from you, through a private DNS pinned and locked at system level, so it covers the browser and the pages opened inside games and chat apps. This mechanism needs Android 9 or newer; on an older phone there is no DNS filtering.

Any change you make from the supervisor app reaches the phone in about three seconds, and instantly when the silent push fires. A blocked app closes in about a third of a second, and if it happened to be open at the moment it was blocked it closes at that same moment.

3. Read the reports regularly, not obsessively

From the supervisor app you see an activity report for each device, weekly usage broken down by day, the list of installed apps with their icons, an instant lock, and a message you can push to the screen. You also see where the phone is on a map, with a short trail of its recent route, which is what settles a mother's mind when her son is late. The location permission is granted by device policy, so no prompt appears that the child could refuse, and we deliberately did not ask for background location, so the phone is not left permanently showing a notice that your organisation can see your location. Make reading the reports a calm weekly sitting with your child rather than an anxious minute-by-minute watch: the goal is to change behaviour, not to catch mistakes.

4. And the PC?

Google says plainly that computers other than Chromebooks cannot be supervised through Family Link, and the supervisor app does not manage them either. Tabaa Desktop for Windows is a separate self-control product: whoever uses the machine decides what gets blocked, and removal takes a password he sets himself. It suits an older son who wants to hold himself to it, and it does not stand in for your supervision.

Advice for handling teenagers

A teenager is not a small child to be run through a managed account, nor an adult to be left entirely alone. Explain why the protection is going on before you put it there, involve him in choosing which apps are allowed, and make lifting restrictions a gradual reward for keeping to the agreement: every default list can be lifted item by item for his device alone, apart from the porn floor. Technical blocking prevents the slip in a moment of curiosity, but the relationship is what stops him going looking for another device. The default lists: what does the device start with?

We do not ask you to build a blocklist from nothing. The device starts with a ready default list: 32 apps blocked on the phone, 11 of them unofficial Telegram forks, because blocking the official app is meaningless if a modified copy of it gets through; VPN, proxy and DNS-changer packages blocked in every mode and suspended even if they were installed before Tabaa; and on top of that a DNS layer covering the porn, gambling, dating and piracy categories, with SafeSearch forced.

More importantly, these lists were reviewed item by item rather than copied from a ready-made source: out of 189 items reviewed, 30 were removed for being wrong or for doing more harm than good. One example makes the logic clear: the block on Bing and DuckDuckGo was dropped, because blocking a search engine breaks the pinning of safe search on it and pushes the child towards engines with no filtering at all. Wider blocking is not always safer blocking.

The cost, in Egyptian pounds

Prices are in Egyptian pounds, the same for every device however many there are, and each product has its own monthly and yearly plan. Payment is Egyptian and electronic, with coupons and joint renewal for groups, and the full detail is on the pricing page.

And if a renewal is late, three days of grace follow in which nothing changes and nothing is wiped. After that the Tabaa Children phone stops on a single screen saying the subscription has ended and to go to the supervisor, who can then renew or remove the protection from the supervisor app. On Tabaa Desktop the blocking stops being applied once the grace is over, with nothing deleted: everything the owner blocked stays saved on their account and comes back on renewal, the program stays installed, and removing it takes the password they set.
